I'd like to start an open discussion on what to do about upcoming draft files.  I didn't notice it until after the draft file was posted, but we're starting to duplicate players.  For example, Vlade Divac retired in 2007 already, and he's now a new draftee.  Gary Payton, Derrick Coleman, Kendall Gill and a bunch from the 1990 draft class retired in 2007 as well, and is set to be in the 2027 draft file.  As we get farther and farther, this is going to get more prominent.  Wondering how people think we should handle it.

Here's my opinion:
- I don't think we should duplicate players.  Gary Payton already played in this league.
- I would like to get some of the players who were already out of the league before we started (i.e. Larry Johnson) into the league.  We have a slight problem, as I don't have end of year rosters for 2005-2006, but a *little* overlap is acceptable IMO

Here's what I think we should do.
I'd like to get the players who weren't in the league between '90 to around '95 to '96 into the league in the coming drafts.  Obviously, there's not enough for full drafts, so we'll have to combine them with other drafts.
I'd also like to get some of the people drafted post 2005 in the draft in the league.

Here's what I'm thinking.
2027 draft will be a combination of 1990/1991 (available players)
2028 draft will be a combination of 1992/1993 (available players

After that, we get to the point where so many of the players have already been in the league that we can't make a good draft class, so:
2029 draft will be the 2005 nba draft
2030 draft will be the 2006 nba draft
2031 draft will be the 2007 nba draft
2032 draft will be the 2008 nba draft.

Starting with 2033 we'll start doing the 1960 nba drafts, then in 2034 we'll catch up with the nba (we should have 1-2 more nba drafts by that time), then we'll do the 1970's.  That should provide us with draft classes up through ssba 2048 or so.  If we are still doing that at that time, we can then revisit the draft strategy.

well i don?t like the idea at all. the problem is that we will get a big drop off in talent if we exclude guys who played already here. normally that are the best guys who survived 10+seasons in the nba.
i think the 028 draft class will be pretty horrible without shaq, zo, webber, and at least 5 decent players more. the other draft classes should be decent imo.

we'll have to go through the draft classes and find out which players we have to exclude before really being able to judge the classes.  I'll try to do that shortly.

yes, we do have some overlapping players, but as long it's not the same player in the league, one 21 and one 38, it's no problem is guess. we're a FICTIONAL game after all and we mixed up things already by moving back in time, so i'd just move along with the draft as it is.

but i'm open for anything you come up with as well ...

That's a great idea, in my opinion. We avoid the repeat of players, which wouldn't be too much of a problem but I would prefer if we didn't. And as a bonus, we get to the recent drafts much quicker. That will make the league more current with players from the NBA now. Let's do it...

Personally I am in complete agreement with everything in Bods' first post. I believe that is an excellent plan for the future of the draft.

I agree with this.  It gives us an organized plan for the next several drafts.  We will still know who to scout for rookie stats.

Although I do have the same concerns as Pacers with the drop-off in talent, I still think it's a good idea to combine the drafts and have some of the more recent 1s come after that. But, the question is what happens after that? But who cares, thats in a yr or two.

actually, thinking of it, i do believe the idea of using no duplicate players has a nice vibe. And after Biedrins went out last season, once Dwight retires we will have a "clean" age structure as well. It's the last mohican from the original league file.
