Pistons Agree.  The Sampson era was exciting, but with the retiring of Brice and the loss of Munson, it was time to move on.  With Smits I get the #4 pick in last years draft who should be a contributor for years to come, and I get 4 years of him on his rookie contract.  Now we can see what Rosow will do as the man offensively.

Wow. Now that's two GMs with good reps (if I may say so myself) who've traded Sampson.

Happy to pair Ralph and Hakeem...Ralph should be a very good player for 3-6 more seaons.  How Smits develops will determine who wins this trad but I don't think he will be as good as Ralph is now.  Should be an interesting experiment. Once Darren Rice comes back, this cast of characters should be able to get us in the playoffs, as long as Ralph and Hakeem can co-exist.

Here's hoping Smit's potential is somewhere around 400-500 to make this trade fair.

Fair isn't exactly the goal when trading a 27 year old with D potential showing signs of decline making max money on a team that can't realistically compete.  I basically trade manute bol, got 3 years of competing, and turned it into a fresh 22 year old center that should be good for 16/10 in his prime.

It has been my experience in the past that centers with low potential tend to decline (quicker than, say, pg's).  I expect Sampson's defense to become an issue in 2-3 years.  I got value while I can, knowing full well that I can't compete in that 2-3 year window.

well it's pretty obvious Sampson's potential is somwhere around 3 to 5.
minus 4 ratings overall in 5 TCs, we're looking at the next Oscar Ferry here ...

That being said, I keep waiting for Sampson to decline, and he keeps throwing up career years.  So what do I know.  He's averaging a career high in points this year on 48% shooting.  Had I not lost munson this past offseason, I wouldn't have been looking to trade Sampson.

Yea, I'm pleased with the deal obviously, it's a chance, I know Smits true potential and it's average, so I am taking the chance that old Ralphy has long enough left in the tank to gel with Hakeem and get a shot at the title.  It's obvious that Ralph has low potential and his defense will become an issue quickly which is why I didn't pull the trigger right away with the deal.  I think it's a good deal for both teams.

Much more often than not, Sampson will be a plus player. Hawks are much better now, if Hakeem and Ralph get along.
