Was wondering where does Magic ranks among all time rookies in SSBA?

18.5ppg, 6rpg, 8apg, 1.5spg, 50% from the floor.

a lot of rookies have put up good numbers.  Keogan and Gatling come to mind.  Ferry and Petit etc.

Magic's good, but he's not the second coming Very Happy

I made an overview of good rookie seasons, and Magic is right there.
Not the best IMHO, which belongs to Pettit, Ferry and Mercer, but among the best.

The table below is sorted by PPG, and among all those rookies i'd rank Earvin probably around #5-8
Looking at PGs only i'd rank him below Mercer and ahead of O'Connell, Milner, English and Marquez.

you are right.

It should read
1. Mercer
2. O'Connell
3. Magic

Just looked it up, and saw that Barton never was offensive option in his rookie season. Still he scored 12ppg on fantastic percentages and had more assists and less TOs than Magic.

Mercer isn't even debateable, he was all offense the Bulls had back then, with only young Eddy Curry and Griffin there to help him. He had to do it all as a rookie and was main focus of the opponents defense, yet still he had those great statline.

btw, one more rookie I forgot in my list who clearly belongs:

Never liked Mercer. He was like Steve Francis, i would rather keep him on the bench. He haven't improved a single team. Shoot first pg with alots of turnovers. Can't get worst.

Shoot first pg with alots of turnovers.

And how does that not describe Magic?
Magic is a very, very good player, and unguardable as an A- inside PG, but he is also top 15 in TO's per game....

Magic has more apg, less tpg's and better % from the field. There's the diference.

I know, we could guess from your comment.

But keep in mind that this is the ROOKIE SEASON only we are talking about and that Magic is currently #3 in TOs behind Mercer and English.

It's debateable if we shouldn't rate Milner ahead of Magic as well, since he posted pretty similar numbers apart from the scoring (and Milner too only was #3 offensive option in a couple of sims and mostly no option at all), but averaged just 2.2 TOs.

Yes, yes...   And Mercer had a high 3 pt percentage, more points, more steals, and even more blocks...  Not the point.  And I would still much rather have Magic... But...
Accuse Mercer of being a shoot-first pg with alot of turnovers, but Magic is also a shoot first PG with alot of to's.

Eh, as i said, if you're going to be a shoot first pg, at least do it in a quaility fashion. There's a diference between 7.9apg and 7.6, bewteen 50% from the floor and 46, between 4.1tpg and 3.3tpg. One could say there is not soo much diferences just looking at these numbers but i think they have alots of impact once they're translated into actual game.

Nice!

Barton O'Connell with 9.1apg, most ever for a Rookie!

Also, his FG% and FT% are far superior to anyone else on that list!
