OK, I've come up with a rule for tanking.

Tanking will not be allowed.  It tarnishes the league.  It's not a realistic option in the nba, with dissent from owners, fans and players coming down on GM's.  It will not be a viable option here, either.  The top picks in the draft are meant to be used for bad teams who need the picks to get competitive, not for mediocre teams looking for the one piece to push them over the top.  It also hurts playoff teams in the standings, as teams who played you earlier in the year had it harder to get a win than teams who are playing you now.

Process
If you see a depth chart where you think someone is tanking, send a pm to me.  If one team gets 5 tanking nominations, it will go to review.  The 3 moderators and I will then decide whether we think your intentions are to tank.  It takes a unanimous vote (all 4 of us) in order for someone to immediately be labeled as a tank depth chart.  Your box for the week in the check-in will then be marked red.  4 depth charts labaled as "tanks" in a season will give us the option to replace you in the league if we decide to.

Moderators, if you do not wish to be in the decison panel, let me know and I will decide on someone to replace you.

Criteria for tanking:
Unfortunately, there are no set rules we can lay down to squarely say you're tanking.  That's why we require a nomination AND a unanimous vote.  That way it requires your league mates to be upset at you and complete agreement from us.

Here are some of the guidelines we will take into consideration when making the determination if you are tanking.
- Are you trying to determine how much you can get from other pieces.  If so, this is a valid roster move.
- Are you trying to determine the worth of younger players.  In combination with these first two factors, which again constitutes a valid roster move.  Trying to determine what contribution you can get from a guy with C, D scoring isn't going to fly, as you know they'll never be starters material with those ratings.  Again, this is a judgement call.
- Are you routinely benching/placing on IR people whom regarly played 30 mpg or more before this and who do not have current injuries.  This would be a sign of tanking.

These are just some of the criteria.  I'll probably be adding more as I think of them.

We will not determine if prior dc's were tanked, only starting from sim 11 on.

I like this rule, good decision since it keeps the league competitive.

i think its a good rule, and i wolcome being on the commitee that will discuss the  possible violations.

However there is a fine line between tanking, and being bad.

The sonics gm went from being a finals team to the league worst,
and i think he knew what he was doing as he tore his team apart. thats kinda a form of tanking.

i just think that everyone should be judicious in their nominations, because it could get out of hand, and we have accusations flying all around if we're not smart about it .

There's a difference between making GM moves that are taking a step back before taking a step forward and coaching decisions to throw games.

We're not nomating GM moves, only depth charts.

I don't think that I tanked in any way.  I had an old team with terrible contracts.  Once I dealt one or two of them away (KVH and Big Z), I was left with not a very good team.

I think that I have been able to turn a bunch of so-so players into picks and cap room for the future.  It's ok to take a step back (as the NetsGM stated) for a jump into the future the next year.  It is another thing to have a great team and place your three best players on the IR to get a high pick, only to then have your players "healthy" once again for a run.

Just my two cents.

No, I understand that, and i agree with the idea and premise of the rule, i just worry that some people may just throw out allegations about tanking with any teams that are doing that.

And that's why it requires us to unanimously agree.  Simply requiring a set # of votes would simply be a way to get rid of GM's 5 or more people don't like.  That would be wrong.

Also, the rule requires a pm, not an open confrontation in the DC thread. This ensures that the board won't be dominated by talks about who is and who isn't tanking and various responses to the allegations.

I think we should also account for teams who are trying to drive up certain player's value in the market, aka "showcasing."
That, to me, is not tanking. For example, in the previous league I played Pietrus over Richardson in season 1 and made him a primary scoring option. This wasn't to try to sink my team; it was designed to showcase a guy for a few sims to boost his stats. It worked, btw...

I don't know how the rest of you feel about that type of action though...
