It reminds me of a story about Pepper Rodgers when he was coaching for UCLA, he had some difficult seasons. Which, as a coach, is very depressing. He recalled an especially bad year.

Rodgers once told a reporter: "My dog was about my only friend. And I told my wife that man needs at least two friends. She bought me two dogs."
