I think the combination of having a chance at getting someone decent with the pick next year, and having 2.5 mil more in precious cap space was too much to pass up.

And for me, it's a relatively low risk trade getting me a huge young man who can help fill the five spot. He's already shown some good shot-blocking ability, rebounds at a decent clip and won't kill me from the line like many bigs do.

I don't like his zero-net-improvement last TC, but hopefully that changes this year and the next two. And since I plan to make the playoffs this year, the pick should be in the 20 range, where I see the odds being about 30-70 that I could get a guy of his calibre anyway. Worth losing the one year of rookie contract and smidge of cap space.
