I remember previously in this sim, if there was a player expiring that I did not have bird rights to, that player would automatically choose the option of going to free agency, because I couldn't re-sign him(I never had cap space before). So in the upcoming off-season, if I have a player that I do not have bird rights to, and I am under the cap, that player has the option of staying and giving me his asking salary?

Yes.  And players without bird rights can ask for extensions too, as I previously said, up to 120% of the previous salary.

I think it might affect his loyalty.  As in if the Knicks offered him a contract he'd be "loyal" even though they're not his previous team.
