Title: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: NetsGM on April 25, 2008, 01:42:26 PM I'd like to start an open discussion on what to do about upcoming draft files. I didn't notice it until after the draft file was posted, but we're starting to duplicate players. For example, Vlade Divac retired in 2007 already, and he's now a new draftee. Gary Payton, Derrick Coleman, Kendall Gill and a bunch from the 1990 draft class retired in 2007 as well, and is set to be in the 2027 draft file. As we get farther and farther, this is going to get more prominent. Wondering how people think we should handle it.
Here's my opinion: - I don't think we should duplicate players. Gary Payton already played in this league. - I would like to get some of the players who were already out of the league before we started (i.e. Larry Johnson) into the league. We have a slight problem, as I don't have end of year rosters for 2005-2006, but a *little* overlap is acceptable IMO Here's what I think we should do. I'd like to get the players who weren't in the league between '90 to around '95 to '96 into the league in the coming drafts. Obviously, there's not enough for full drafts, so we'll have to combine them with other drafts. I'd also like to get some of the people drafted post 2005 in the draft in the league. Here's what I'm thinking. 2027 draft will be a combination of 1990/1991 (available players) 2028 draft will be a combination of 1992/1993 (available players After that, we get to the point where so many of the players have already been in the league that we can't make a good draft class, so: 2029 draft will be the 2005 nba draft 2030 draft will be the 2006 nba draft 2031 draft will be the 2007 nba draft 2032 draft will be the 2008 nba draft. Starting with 2033 we'll start doing the 1960 nba drafts, then in 2034 we'll catch up with the nba (we should have 1-2 more nba drafts by that time), then we'll do the 1970's. That should provide us with draft classes up through ssba 2048 or so. If we are still doing that at that time, we can then revisit the draft strategy. Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: PacersGM on April 25, 2008, 02:33:47 PM well i don?t like the idea at all. the problem is that we will get a big drop off in talent if we exclude guys who played already here. normally that are the best guys who survived 10+seasons in the nba.
i think the 028 draft class will be pretty horrible without shaq, zo, webber, and at least 5 decent players more. the other draft classes should be decent imo. Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: NetsGM on April 25, 2008, 03:23:01 PM we'll have to go through the draft classes and find out which players we have to exclude before really being able to judge the classes. I'll try to do that shortly.
Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: CelticsGM on April 25, 2008, 03:55:28 PM yes, we do have some overlapping players, but as long it's not the same player in the league, one 21 and one 38, it's no problem is guess. we're a FICTIONAL game after all and we mixed up things already by moving back in time, so i'd just move along with the draft as it is.
but i'm open for anything you come up with as well ... Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: CavsGM on April 25, 2008, 06:37:06 PM That's a great idea, in my opinion. We avoid the repeat of players, which wouldn't be too much of a problem but I would prefer if we didn't. And as a bonus, we get to the recent drafts much quicker. That will make the league more current with players from the NBA now. Let's do it...
Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: HeatGM on April 25, 2008, 08:39:12 PM i dont like overlapping players...lets try to make it as real as possible... id dont like mixing 2 drafts classes also like 1987 with 1993 for example...id dont like to see kyle macy playing with shaq or somebody in the different era... combined draft file 1987 with 1988 for example..id like bods idea
Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: RaptorsGM on April 26, 2008, 12:18:14 AM Personally I am in complete agreement with everything in Bods' first post. I believe that is an excellent plan for the future of the draft.

I believe that is an excellent plan for the future of the draft. I agree with this. It gives us an organized plan for the next several drafts. We will still know who to scout for rookie stats. Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: WolvesGM on April 26, 2008, 11:41:37 PM Although I do have the same concerns as Pacers with the drop-off in talent, I still think it's a good idea to combine the drafts and have some of the more recent 1s come after that. But, the question is what happens after that? But who cares, thats in a yr or two.
Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: CelticsGM on April 27, 2008, 02:11:40 AM actually, thinking of it, i do believe the idea of using no duplicate players has a nice vibe. And after Biedrins went out last season, once Dwight retires we will have a "clean" age structure as well. It's the last mohican from the original league file.

Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: ClippersGM on April 27, 2008, 12:26:05 PM I like this idea cause soon enough we will get to the more recent players which iam looking forward 2.

Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: NetsGM on April 28, 2008, 12:05:49 PM Here are the eligible guys for both drafts (1990/1991 and 1992/1993). IMO we have enough good players (particularly in 1992/1993) to have viable draft classes:
1990: Mohmoud Abdul-Rauf Dennis Scott Felton Spencer lionel simmons bo kimble willie burton rumeal robinson tyrone hill alec kessler loy vaught travis mays dave jamerson terry mills duane causwell dee brown gerald glass jayson williams tate george anthony bonner dwayne schintzius alaa abdelnaby lance blanks toni kukoc AJ English jud buechler bimbo coles Antonio Davis Cedric Ceballos 1991: Larry Johnson Kenny Anderson Billy Owens Doug Smith Luc Longley Mark Macon Stacey Augmon Bison Dele Terrell Brandon Greg Anthony Rich King Anthony Avent Chris Gatling Victor Alexander Kevin Brooks LaBradford Smith John Turner Eric Murdock LeRon Ellis Stanley Roberts Rick Fox Mark Randall Pete Chilcutt 1992: Christian Laettner LaPhonso Ellis Tom Gugliotta Walt Williams Todd Day Clarence Weatherspoon Harold Miner Bryant Stith Malik Sealy Anthony Peeler Randy Woods Tracy Murray Don MacLean Hubert Davis Jon Barry Lee Mayberry Latrell Sprewell Elmore Spencer Dave Johnson Byron Houston PJ Brown Matt Geiger 1993: Anfernee Hardaway Jamal Mashburn isaiah rider calbert cheaney bobby hurley vin baker George Lynch Terry Dehere Scott Haskin Doug Edwards Rex Walters Greg Graham Luther Wright Acie Earl Scott Burrell James Robinson Chris Mills Ervin Johnson Geert Hammink Malcolm Mackey Nick Van Exel Byron Russell Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: NetsGM on April 28, 2008, 12:07:31 PM Larry Johnson one year, Jamal Mashburn, Anfernee Hardaway, Clarence Weatherspoon and Vin Baker the next. Remember, we're basing these off of their rookie years. The fact that Mashburn and Penny had huge injury issues (and Vin Baker other issues) doesn't effect tehir level of prospect.
Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: NetsGM on April 28, 2008, 12:10:54 PM Bods' idea sounds good.
Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: MagicGM on May 03, 2008, 10:59:36 PM hill didn't make it too
Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: Iverson2Korver43 on June 28, 2008, 07:48:09 PM I agree, Grant Hill should be there as he was not originally in the league...
Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: JazzGM-old2 on June 28, 2008, 11:28:44 PM If you exclude a player that was a top tier guy, couldn't you just add one in under a different name? Not sure if that's even possible, but, like the other guys mentioned I am leery of hurting the top talent in this year's draft. Why? I have the 2nd worst record in the league and therefore I will have a top 5 pick. So, if you go about removing the best players in the game you hurt my ability to rebuild. And with the boatload of crap that's on my team, I'm really counting on there being a franchise player available for me.
To me, maybe not to you, that is far more important than if a guy shares a name with a player that used to be in the league. So, my proposal is to change the names of the players if you must, but, leave the stats alone. Title: Re: Draft Files: What to do? Post by: RaptorsGM on August 06, 2008, 04:48:02 PM Not that is has anything to do with this thread or anything else for that matter, but is this the best CPU generated rookie you guys have ever seen...?
