Title: Austrian heroics @ Olympics Torino 2006
Post by: CelticsGM on March 01, 2006, 04:44:26 PM
Oh what a marvelous performance from tiny Austria in the Olympic Winter Games just completed.

An Austrian olympic record 23 medals, including 9 golden ones, 3rd in the medal count only behind Germany and USA, but ahead of great winter sports countries like Russia, Canada, an Norway.

Austria not only completely dominated the Alpine Skiing events, taking home 14 of 30 possible medals (4 golden) including a clean sweep of the men's slalom taking the top 3 spots to end it, but also topped the ski jumping and nordic combined events.

Just amazing, just amazing ...

You're not talking bout Michaela Dorfmeister, taking home gold in the downhill and super-g, do you ? No, she's Austrian ...

im talking about Janica who would take all golds if she was not with a fever and very sick so she decided to not run 2 races and went home before super slalom, however she took medals again and she would have taken more if she was not with a 40 C fever and exhausted,......you know what im talking about, and we all know who is the Queen

Oh THAT lady.

yeah, she is always injured, even when winning gold medals. It was big comedy (last world champ'ships i think it was) when she raced down the slalom fastest in both runs and pretended not even being able to walk before, inbetween runs and after that.

She must be some sort of superhero on kryptonite ...

And I got to know, was she ill when she didnt start in the downhill (where she hardly had a chance for a medal anyway) or later when she won gold in the combined or later when she finished 13th in the slalom or later when she was 2nd in the super-g or later when she opted out of the giant slalom due to fatigue (what from ???)

Whatever, the world knows who is the best !

...and yes, she had many problems with injurys and now sickness and she is not a type of person who is faking up an injury, she is a warrior, but even a warrior has to quit sometimes like she did this Olympics cause it was just too much and too risky for her to race the last one as well, she would do that race like always but then she is already most succesfull olympic medallist in history and there is still WC to win so risk was too big this time.

.........and tell me have u ever seen a women racing the slalom without a stick and moving 4 positions and making best time of the race without a stick which she did in january ???? it was an amazing stuff, unseen in the history....you austrians are just jelous hehehhe

Now don't get me wrong, she is a great skier, together with Anja Paerson probably the most complete female skier in this generation now - both can win any event (especially the technical, not so the speed events) - and that's why these two won 2 overall world cups each in recent years. And both race in every single world cup event each year.

For the "best ever" discussion, here's an interesting list:
Women's All-time Super Ranking
1  Annemarie Proell AUT 314,5
2  Vreni Schneider SUI 266
3  Katja Seizinger GER 191
4  Janica Kostelic CRO 173,5
5  Anja Paerson SWE 162,5
from a great stats site: http://www.ski-db.com/

These Olympics clearly weren't her's, but she's still THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FEMALE ALPINE SKIER in Winter Olympics history (not most successful athlete in general and especially not counting summer games too).  To only look at active skiers, Kjetil Andre AAMODT gets the nod winning 8 or 9 medals (4 gold) in the last FIVE Olympic games.

But that slalom ride when she lost the glove and stick was sure something special. It HAS BEEN DONE before, I remember people even WINNING races after losing a stick (Janica finished 2nd this time), but again it was a lot of fun to watch and it only shows what great trained athlete she is.

If only there wasn't that acting ...

But hey, jealous we don't have to be, not in a sports where we have so many successful athletes like in none other. I appreciate great performances even if accompished by foreign competitors, no doubt. Athletes like Paerson and Bode Miller are somewhat looked up to here too. Just that Kostelic family has a bad rep in Austria, Janica with her "acting like injured" job that nobody outside Croatia believes anymore (which is a pity as most of it might actually be for real) and Ivica with those stupid nazi-quotes some years ago ...

She is just 23, if injurys dont occurr too often, in next 7-8 seasons when she will finish her career she will be the best ever for sure by statistics as well.

Kostelic would be 27 next Olympics. If she continues at her current pace, getting injured more and more each year there won't be another Olympic games for her.

And don't forget one thing: LUCK. In 2002, when she won 3 Olypmic gold and a silver medal, she plain lucked out. In the other 35 races that season she won exactly ONCE and finished top 3 TWO MORE TIMES !!! That season she finished 14th in the overall world cup standings no less.

So don't make her look like a superhero. This season, her most complete so far in her career, the Olympics were mediocre by her standards, in 2002 it was vice versa.

The "M_I_C_H_A_E_L  J_O_R_D_A_N  O_F  S_K_I_I_N_G". Hahaha, too funny.

Since skiing is no team sports i'd probably call her the DAN O'BRIAN of skiing. If you don't know him he was one of the best decathlon athletes from the US ... and injured a lot too.

Janica won ONE downhill, ONE super-g, ONE giant slalom (all three her career first), ONE slalom and ONE combined event this season and she's leading the overall world cup standings. So she definitely shows her versatility competing in every race (but being hardly favourite in anything but the slalom).

Hey, croatians, she's good, but she's not, repeat NOT the best skier ever to "lace them up". But if everythings runs right she has the tools to get there once her career is done ...

... and thats as much as i will agree to. nuff said !
 8)

btw, Dorfmeister continued her winning ways from the Olympics taking the Super-G in Hafjerr/NOR earlier today. Janica finished 14th ...

it was not luck, she is best when its most needed, like she proved many times winning tons of World Cup medals and those olympics, on big events shes psichologically best prepared always and thats a big adventage she has over other skiiers.

Not so fast homers ...

She might not even be the best ACTIVE skier. Anja Paerson, just a year older than Janica. She has a couple less medals (but took a gold and two more in Torino2006), but won a lot more races than Janica overall including multiple races in every category, not just slalom. And she won 2 overall world cups, just as Janica. An injury cut her season short this year, but otherwise she's the current leader. Sorry ...

u nuts hommie ??? Janica spent 2 years not racing with injury, and she has A LOT more WC medals, a lot more OG medals, and FIS victories ??? Also a lot more, not to mention Person never won in all cathegorys(slalom, downhill, etc) and Janica is the only one with Vreni and Katja who achieved that (i think Pernilla also but im not sure about her).

Title: Austrian heroics @ Olympics Torino 2006

just check before you post:

World Cup Victories
Kostelic
DH GS SL SG K TOT
01 01 18 01 05 26
World Champ's: 5 gold 5 overall
Olympics: 4 gold, 6 overall

Paerson
DH GS SL SG K TOT
02 11 17 02 00 32
World Champ's: 4 gold 6 overall
Olympics: 1 gold, 5 overall

So yes, Kostelic got 4 more golds but both have 11 medals at big events, 2 overall world cups and Anja won at least twice in every category but (surprisingly) combined.

And the other skiers who won in every category were Pernilla Wiberg and Austrian Petra Kronberger, a 3-time world cup winner from 1990-92. Vreni never even raced a a downhill I believe and Katja was a speed queen mostly.

again, big thanks to ski-db.com for assisting me in proving the croations wrong over and over again ...

my argumentation: Janica is very good, among the world best skiers (with Anja and Dorfmeister), got more GOLD medals but but didn't win as many world cup races. And it's hard to find out if she's the best there ever was (how do you compare generations?).

your argumentation: JANICA IS SUPERHERO, BEST THERE EVER WAS, NOBODY IS EVEN CLOSE AND WHOLE SKIING CIRCUS BREAKES DOWN CRYING WHEN SHE ARRIVES.

well, I let that speak for itself ...

That's a complete lie. She's very modest and down to earth girl (like her all family) and she always congrats her opponents on a race and she NEVER talks about herself.

And trust me, croatians really don't have a problem with that. We (sadly) in general almost never respect anything that's ours. If we were to have a diferent mentality we would probably be one the richest state in the world.

So I guess 10-time world champion Michael Phelps is the greatest athlete of all time, beating MJ's 6 titles + 2 olympic golds + 1 world championship. Ups there was Mark Spitz, winning 7 or 8 gold medals at Munich 72. Or countless others ... what a crappy argument

In fact, let's call her one-time wonder in some disciplines (like downhill, where she was world champ despite never winning a downhill race before. Same goes for her giant slalom olympic gold - though she later won both events ONCE *lol*). Phelps won like 30 races in each discipline he later captured gold.

Man oh man, the more i look into the facts the more overrated your beloved Janica looks ...

she just won 27th and you can count one more title now, being 3, if she hasnt been injured 2 years, she would have at least 10 more wins and at least 1 title more(she was winning everything (all slalom races except 1 then))............and dont forget she lost one title when she got injured few races before the end and she had like 250 points more then others but in last 5,6 races one girl (i think it was dorfmeister) collected more end she ended up 2nd or 3rd.

Wasn't Mark Spitz Michael Jordan of swimming? Why isn't that valid comparison? Both atlethes dominated in their own field.

You finally got it.

Spitz winning 18 gold medals (including 9 Olympic) and retiring at age 22, Phelps winner of 17 gold medals  and counting being just 21 now. I don't have to post MJ's achievements here. All three DOMINATED every competition.

Kostelic does not. She's a good alpine combined and especially slalom skier racing to 24 of her 27 wins in these events. Only this season she won her first race in any of the other events too, but that versatility comes with a price as she only got one slalom win in 8 starts. So to say she's DOMINATING alpine skiing is a bit of a reach. Janica is capable of a top5 finish in most races, but she's hardly favoured to win, especially in the speed events. And that seperates her from the all-time greats so far. MJ, Spitz and in skiing Vreni Schneider and Ingemar Stenmark were EXPECTED to win and it was a surprise if they didn't.

Unfortunately you hear here talking bout the end of her career. It's just sad that will all her injuries you can only wonder what could have been.

Now while I disagree with Blazers that she WOULD have won this or that barring injury (no, Marin, she just COULD have won, nobody knows) it's clear to me that she is part of the greatest all-time skiers. Just not THE best there ever was ...

Janica has 4 olympic golds, Anja 1.

Janica has more World championship medals then Anja and more World Cup titles so this topic is closed.

WRONG.

Anjy clearly gets the edge here as she won 33 WORLD CUP races (Kostelic 28) in addition to 35 more podium places in world cup races (Janica 25 more). Check here (and believe me, the first table is ONLY world cup races):
Anja: http://www.ski-db.com/db/profiles/wpaean.asp
Janica: http://www.ski-db.com/db/profiles/wkstja.asp

Both won 2 overall world cup titles (with Kostelic likely winning a third one now).

Guess you need a more reliable source next time

Kostelic got 5 world champ gold's (in 7 starts), Anja got just 4 plus a silver and a bronze (in 8 starts)
Kostelic got 4 olympic golds and 2 silver medals (in 8 starts) while Anja got one gold, one silver and three bronze (in 6 starts)

The more I read here in this topic, the happier I am about being a snowboarder and not a skier!

Oh yeah, you snowboarders are above any national pride, just one big happy familiy.

As suspected, that horrible Jacobellis incident made her a hero among fellow boarders. Finally someone who stands above that competitive hunt for medales, gold medals, and has some FUN doing his sports.

Oh man,i don't know what's worse, the "blind-to-anyone-else" national support of the croatian community or the "negating-any-competitive-spirit" mindset of the boarding community ...

It's not our fault that croatians are better then austrians in every sport imaginable. From basketball, soccer, skiing, tennis you name it.

We are you in, you know, real sport? Basketball, soccer, tennis, voleyball, handball etc etc. Do you even play that over there?

Basketball we play on the 3rd european level (with superior nations like Cyprus, Island and Malta),

in Soccer we qualify for every third world championships (and since we host the european championship 2008 we're already qualified there). Otherwise we're ranked 75 in the world just behind the Democratic Republic of Kongo. (Our "high time" came in the 1950ies where we have a 3rd place in world's to show)

In Tennis we haven't had a player in the top 20 since Thomas Muster, former world #1, stepped down like 8 years ago. We got 2 players in the top 100 i believe. For Ladies Tennis it's about the same.

In Volleyball we have two fine clubs playing regularly in the European Champions league (but since they have around 10 foreign players each our national team isn't even worth mentioning).

Handball, what's handball. Playing the ball with the hand does result in a free kick or penalty, right ?

Hey, it's Austria and we have snow. Or ice hockey team regularly plays in the world championships. We got great cross country skiers (that are not ALL part of the doping scandal) and a few more. Ice skating isn't sports for me, its show. And don't even talk about Curling ...

Funny enough some other events produced Austrian olympic champions: Sailing, Judo, Triathlon, Windsurfing, Shooting.

But again, we are too small and wealthy to produce great teams. Kids don't have that incentive anymore to get out of slums or poor life conditions (apart from those world class skiiers coming mostly from small towns in the alps).

Believe me, most of the time it's no fun being Austrian sports supporter nowadays ...

Oh shit. ANOTHER first place and Cristal Globus for Janica! Anja was astonishing 300 points behind Janica  .

And the dad of Anja Paerson said; "Janica's results forced Anja to drive above her capabilities. That's why so many times she didn't finish the race (she falled several times :) ). Simply, Janica forces her to drive well above her abilities."

Congratulations to Kostelic for winning the overall World Cup and the Slalom World Cup (and only the 2nd giant slalom in her career today). A truly dominant season towards the end after the mediocre Olympic showing. Her consistency to finish almost every race clearly put her on top of the overall rankings.

But Ivan, don't believe anything the croatian media reports, they might be a little bit biased. Today Anja did have to take just enough risk to finish ahead of Rienda-Contreras to win the Giant Slalom World Cup (which she did). Congratulations to her too, as well as to Michi Dorfmeister, winner of the Downhill AND Super-G World Cup (and Olympic champ in both events), who raced the final race of her career today. She finished third in the overall World Cup standings and is a true champion, as well as former Overall World Cup winner herself ...

Hey, i never said she's not a great one. But please leave the greatest ever talks for now, there were female skiers winning 6 overall World Cups and 50+, even 60+ races. Way to go there ...

she-ll do that if she stay healthy, she would have had 2 more titles and 15 more wins for sure if she didnt lose 2 and half years injured and she is still just 24..........Senna didnt win most races as well or champs -cause he died very young, but we all know he is the best of all times, records are not everything, just like if Senna hadnt died he would race for another 8-10 years, win few more champs, many races, and nobody would talk about Schumacher now.

A paragraph with too many "woulds" and "coulds" and "hadn'ts" is quite funny.

No she wouldn't hav had 2 more titles when healty, you need more than an injury-free season for that (see last season when she finished 2nd without any injuries)

And no, she didn't miss 2.5 seasons but only 1.5 seasons (in fact she missed parts of 2001/02 season and the complete 2003/04 season)
