Nice to see the Hawks finally sign a free agent...  And they signed a pretty good one, imo.

Discgusting. Time for some major moves...

it's very nice to finally get someone.  The Nets outbid me for Battier but it probably wouldn't have mattered anyway.  I also got Jameer at a lower price that I first had thought I could because a lot of the big money was gone after day 1 so I figured that I could go a little cheaper.

Well, my first day offers for Billups and Battier were 8 mil/year and 6 mil/year respectively.  I ended up bumping them each up 2 mil/year to make sure I got them.  Wish I didn't, but I just wanted to get them locked up.  Especially with the Hawks having a ton of cap room, I was worried he'd steal Battier away from me and making a much higher offer.  As it stood, I think the Hawks offer was for about 5 million more total, but Battier chose to re-sign.

I also got my typical "expiring contracts at ridiculous prices to be used as trade fodder".  Except this year, with me being completely over the cap for years to come, I might actually use them.  Aaron Williams at 11 million, MacLean at 5.4 million, Jackson at 6.4 million.  All 3 of them might be on the injured reserve, lol.

Only one guy left to sign.

Your contract actually came out to a little higher than mine, with your raises and mine being a flat contract.  You had me worried.  My original offer ws 6 mil/year, I bumped it up to 8 after he didn't decide day 1, but I was really worried what you would offer him.

Nice signing with Jameer.

Now time to sign Leandro and my offseason will be complete.

Day 4 will still be run tonight.  My offers have been submitted to HornetsGM.

Is there anything left at all?

Title: Day 2 Free Agency Results
Post by: HawksGM on September 03, 2005, 11:58:36 AM
yea, after day 1 went south I felt I needed to get Jameer and Shane to be able to be better than my team was last season.  I got Jameer (great pick-up, good scorer and defender) and lost out of Shane who is an excellent defender.  Nets are looking scary with that team.  If you keep Shane and Chauncey both you will be cap tied but you will be real good.

BTW, since this was run so late, I will extend the amount of time to make sign and trades to only 24 hours (in the rule book it says the deadline is either 24 hours or when the next sim is run, whichever comes first)

But now the Nets have one of the best guard rotations...  Very similar to the Nuggets old rotation, back when they had both Chauncey and Boykins.

The Juan Ward signing is a bit unusual.

Not really too much left, at this point.

the best thing that comes out this off-season for the Hawks is Jameer obviously, but if JDN doesn't want too big of a contract I'll have some money to spend on next year's FA class.

Well, it is pretty much the Nuggets old rotation ;)

And I hope to add Leandro, who was amazing off the bench last year.  Very good scorer and defender.

Yeah, well I had wanted to get my lineup in there for a while.  I thought you did it the best.

Besides, I wanted to show off my deep bench of chauncey, Salmons and Lo :)

(Barbosa will be in there as well, probably replacing turkoglu, if he signs).

you know, after the draft debacle, and with what happened on day 1 fa, i felt bad for you.

for a second.

until i realized you won, what was it, 1 or 2 championships in the old league?

bastard.

lol 1, should have been 2 but Big Ben missed 2 games in a series and I lost in 7.  Yea, I don't want any sympathy, I just have to go back to my old GM style, even though it's not as fun as trading good players all the time.

I have now played a total of 6 SSBA seasons.  I won 50 games in I believe 5 of those 6 seasons.  Still ringless.   That was my first finals appearance right there.

Title: Day 2 Free Agency Results

he was the Hawks in the old league too

He won the 3rd year of the league?

Title: Day 2 Free Agency Results
Post by: HawksGM on September 03, 2005, 12:44:24 PM
yea, that's the worst thing about winning, unless you win the ring it doesn't matter.  And if you are winning 50 games you don't want to make too many moves because it might throw off your chance at winning but the moves you've made has made a 50 win team a possible 60 win team.  I think you have the best team in the league with chemistry and balance wise.  The Sonics have a ton of firepower but it might take 5 sims for them to get accustomed to playing on the court together.

Title: Day 2 Free Agency Results
Post by: NetsGM on September 03, 2005, 12:46:55 PM
Hawks were the Hawks.  I was the Nuggets.

I hope my moves work out.  I really think I fixed 2 of my main weaknesses.  Turnovers and bench production.  Turnovers KILLED me in the later parts of the finals, and his bench outscored mine.

I was telling the Warriors right before Day 1, Ben Gordon was my #1 target.  With his age, potential, defense and outside shooting ability, he could get me a dynasty.  But I thought Earl might help me win more this year, fitting my style of play to a T.

Especially since I like to play an uptempo style of game, I need someone who doesn't turn the ball over AT ALL.

Earl's great at protecting the ball.  Shane doesn't turn the ball over at all.  Emeka isn't bad at turning it over.  And Dalembert doesn't touch the ball ;)

As long as Pettit doesn't turn into Pierce, I should have no problems.

It'll also be interesting to see if a more natural distributor doesn't help Pettit.

Yea I was the Hawks in the old ssba, won with Artest and Big Ben.  Big Ben/PJ Brown/Artest/Louis Williams/Howard Eisley won the championship for me.

Well I'm happy to pick up Banks and House, mostly for their defensive abilities in the backcourt, since the only downgrade from Tinsley to Nash was defense.

Other than losing Collier, everything's gone right for my FA.

Then you traded Artest for Swift with me.

Dunno what I was thinking.  I already had Marion at the 3.  I ended up playing Marion at the 4.

Still won 50 games, but lost in the 2nd round, I believe (the previous year I was in the WCF).

But I was SET after the draft that year.  I had 2 top 15 picks.  One of them was a stud shooting guard prospect, Courtney Long (http://ssba.phillyarena.net/files/oldleague/players/player299.htm).  I played the league out after we started this one up, he was a 20 ppg scorer.  I also got Isidoro Vaugh (http://ssba.phillyarena.net/files/oldleague/players/player489.htm) in that draft.

Bucks, I should have got Donta Smith, 6,000,000 over 5 years with an increase of 5%.  But your team is looking good, Ferry and Okur should be a good combo on the inside w/Kobe and Nash on the permiter.

Yeah, if you want proof that Loyalty, Greed and Play for Winner mean something, that's your example.  Hawks offered a higher starting salary with raises for a longterm deal, which satisfied his lowest attribute (Greed, 20).  But Bucks had loyalty (92) and Play for Winner (89).

Yea, nobody can say that those ratings don't mean anything anymore.  It's obvious that they do with my day 1 offers to lose rate.  Just ask the Warriors, I showed him my list and a lot of  good players turned down my money for loyalty or greed.

Now with all of the good fa's off the market I can declare this has been a bad offseason for me. I do like my draft picks but I think the only way I will win now is by some good trades.

I've played 7.

Was the TOP seed (and most wins in the League) 2 times. Was also second once to Twan's cheating team.

I had what I felt was the best team the year that Twan cheated.

The last 2 years of this SSBA I've felt I had the best team.

Finals apperances: Zero.

Damn, I just realized that Diddle improves his ratings when move to SF. That might throw a little wrench in the plans, but gives me another good trade commodity.

I know that Deng falls to B+ defense at SG, so I really want to start him at SF...

The CavsGM and I debated what Donta would do for about a week heading into Free Agency.

The past two years Donta Smith was one of the first to sign on Day 1 to my offer.  And since I knew the two teams likely to give Smith a big payday were you and the Cavs, I figured the 89 play for winner benefited me.  I knew the 92 loyalty had been a factor in previous offseasons given the speed in which Smith signed on.

I told the CavsGM that I fully expected Smith to resign even if I offered him a long term deal starting at 2.4 million (the amount I was under the cap).  CavsGM told me I was nuts.  I ended up offering 1 year/5.4 instead and he took that over your offer and the Cavs offer (which was higher than your's).

Title: Day 2 Free Agency Results
Post by: HawksGM on September 03, 2005, 02:00:07 PM
wow, that's surprising, that 2.4 million deal wouldn't have got him I don't think.  But that 5.4 million deal is good, and it adds another bird year too.

Title: Day 2 Free Agency Results
Post by: MavsGM on September 03, 2005, 02:14:55 PM
Why won't Cavs do that?  If I were CavsGM I wouldn't said a word since we both are going after the same player.

Title: Day 2 Free Agency Results
Post by: BucksGM on September 03, 2005, 03:15:05 PM
The Cavs and I were discussing a trade that would have shaved 400k off my available cap space.  I told him I wouldn't do it until after I resigned Smith.  Of course, Cavs said the 2.4 million wouldn't come into play regarding Smith anyway.

I told him I was considering offering Smith just 2.4 million.  Cavs said he was worth at least 6, which I couldn't match.  So I knew that at least Cavs/Hawks would offer him more than I could.  So I had to count on loyalty and play for winner.  Since greed was so low, I considered risking offering him 3 million less per year but decided not to tempt fate.

The most I could offer was starting at 5.4.  Cavs and Hawks could offer more, which they did.  So discussing it didn't really matter.

Title: Day 2 Free Agency Results
Post by: NetsGM on September 03, 2005, 03:16:33 PM
Besides, saying you're going to offer 2.4 might make cavs/hawks think that they could get him less than 6 per year.

I should have had Donta. Offered 7 mil to start, and 10% increases, for 4 years. Bucks just stole him away...And I really thought I had Jameer. Offered my cap space(8.7 mil), 4 years, but no increases. But your offer was better. Wish I had offered a little more to Donta, that might have done the trick...

You can't really steal your own free agent :)

And I doubt more money would have done anything: he turned down 2 big time long term contracts for 1 year / 5.4 million.
