Title: Day 1 FA, whats on your wish list?
Post by: SunsGM on September 01, 2005, 01:07:17 AM
Today is the first day of free agency, and there are some decent players out there to be had.

Whats on your wish/want list?
You dont have to be specific, and name names, just curious as to what everyone is looking for.

Suns wishes: Add depth at the swing positions(SF,SG), another big body to backup my first four.

maybe a 3rd point guard.

So, whats everyone else hoping for?

I'm looking for a star and some more depth.  With my win rating I think I will end up unhappy w/this FA but I'm gonna dish out the $$$$ anyway

I'd like one star :)

a bunch of great backups and re-signing my own free agents would do.

If you guys are going to edit your bids, re-send your bids in a new pm.

I'm going to start entering those throughout the day (i've alread pm'd hornets my offers), so if they're changed, re-send them.

just some general musings.

It's always funny to see how different gm's value different players.  Let's just say there's one player getting a 1 year minimum offer from one team, and a 6 year, 58 million $ offer from another.

Then the hawks crack me up.  Not because any of their requests are out of line, but the precision he goes on.  He'll ask for 10% raises on one contract, then the next guy will be 6%, then the next guy 7%.  It's just funny.

Lol...  When you have 25 million to play with, and the best free agent class coming next year, makes free agent decision pretty interesting...  :)

That is a pretty big difference. i wonder who the player is?

and next year is a huge year for free agents, someone with cap room is going to have a chance to make a killing next year on the free agents

Can't really say I'm that surprised, because I wouldn't be surprised if some GM's look only at ratings and not at stats.

Look at guys like Collier and Donta Smith. Not the greatest ratings, but both put up great numbers.

Ah, i'm  at work on my lunchbreak dreaming.

Dreaming of any team trying to stop a perimeter attack of Gordon and Pettit.  Dreaming of my top 3 options being 24 or younger and scoring a combined 65 ppg.  Dreaming of my entire starting 5 being A defenders or better.

dreaming of leading the league in 3 pointers made (yes, I think I'd make more than Sonics, because guards typically take more than forwards, Pettit takes more attempts than Peja and Gordon more than Dirk).

Unfortunately I'm going to have to wake up eventually :(

it's always been a soft deadline.  meaning if you don't get it in by 5 pm, there's no guarantee i haven't run the sim.

however i've always let people send in bids late if I haven't run the sim.

If you want to, you can go back and edit your bids.

Sonics are looking for depth at the SG and PF positions.  With only 3 spots open, hopefully I can land a solid player with the MLE, an alright player with the LLE and another player of some use.

If not, I have all the faith in the world in my starting lineup.  I just need some depth right now.

How many are we waiting for?

And I personally like the fact that it is a soft deadline. Sometimes things come up unexpectedly that pulls me away for a while, and it's nice to know that I don't have to quit wqhat I'm doing to get my bids or dc in by 5.

heat, 76ers, rockets, jazz, clippers, lakers.

you'll notice i said clippers.  he's the one i'm really waiting on.

the gm in me says to run the sim NOW.  With him gone, I have a max offer to gordon on the table (which is as high as anyone can offer him), AND have a starting spot for him AND double the win rating of any of the other contestants.

In short, I'd say if I run the sim now it's about a 90% chance I land Gordon.  And you guys don't want that.

But the commish in me says to give the Clippers every chance to retain Gordon, so that's why I'm waiting until 10.

But if it's not in by 10, I am running the sim.  I can't be doing this at 3 am.

Yes, and I wouldn't wait up for him, but he had mentioned cutting a player (he wanted to skip his first round pick so he could have roster room to enter free agency, until I told him you can only forfeit a pick if your roster is full).  So I'm sure he still has an interest in free agency.

Since the ClippersGM has been on the record as saying that he was going to offer Gordon the max, and since it's such a no brainer, I think if he doesn't get his free agency submission in that he should automatically offer Gordon the max.

I understand this would set quite a precedent, but ClippersGM has said on a number of occasions that he expects to resign Gordon and the max deal coming Gordon's way has been an open topic for weeks.

Personally, I agree.  However, if this is done, then where does it stop?  NetsGM gave the deadline.  If it's missed, then the Clips will lose out.

So, as much as I think that the offer should go through because of the obvious need to resign the young star, the offer should only go through if ClippersGM sends it to the Nets.

Nope.  No way.

Besides, ClippersGM just pm'd me.

Sometimes I wonder why Baron doesn't garner as much interest. He isn't as good of an outside scorer, or ball handler, but his inside scoring, defense and assist ability are all better than Gordons.

But seriously, when Yao was a FA 2 days ago, he didn't even garner as much interest as Gordon has.

I couldn't disagree more. Even as my biggest rival stands to get better.

If the ClippersGM doesn't submit bids to Bods, then he HASN'T MADE AN OFFER.

Say KG becomes a FA in the real NBA. Kevin McHale comes out in the Minny Times (or whatever their paper is) and says he will be offering KG a contract. Is Stern and his head office supposed to officiate the signing because McHale said that in the paper?

Gordon is a 24 year old guy who will score 20 ppg in this league, drop 8+ assists, have nearly as many steals as turnovers, and is one of the best shooters in the game.

Look at his percentages the last 2 years.

Oh, and he's still got A potential.

Gordon >>>>> Baron.

Also, Bods, that would have been as close to cheating as you could get.

You've always had a soft deadline. You've extended sims BY AN ENTIRE DAY before so someone could confirm a trade.

If you had done FA right at 5, that would have been criminal. You made the absolute right decision by waiting.

^ It's McHale's full time job to run the Wolves.

SSBA isn't the ClippersGM's job.  It's not like he's an inactive GM, so when someone that active is MIA on the most important date of his SSBA Season, I'm willing to give that person the benefit of the doubt that there's a compelling reason he couldn't get the submission in on time.

And obviously the ClippersGM has stated again and again that he's gonna offer Gordon the max.

Oh yeah, Gordon is better, no doubt, but I'm getting no PM's about Baron. Really how far behind is Baron? So far that half the GM's in this league dream of Gordon at night, yet no one contacts me about Baron?

And obviously the ClippersGM has stated again and again that he's gonna offer Gordon the max.

You're last sentence is so critical to this conversation. He has stated again and again that he IS GOING TO offer Gordon the max. Not that HE HAS.

And it's the ClippsGM's full time SSBA job to run the Clippers. It is the exact same thing. That's what we do, we are General Managers.

Criminal?  Close to cheating?

I have a life too.

The full list of FA's available was up August 23rd.  That was 9 days ago.  clippersgm had made posts 3 days after the free agent list was set in stone.  Even if something came up, he had more than ample time to send in a list that simply contained "Ben Gordon: max".

Procrastination and irresponsibility are not my problem.

The fact that I have bent over backwards in the past doesn't mean I have to continually do so in the future.  I had every right to enforce a rule that has been here since the inception of the league.

My good nature is the only reason I am not set in stone as the 2009 ssba champions.  Keep in mind not only have I now cost myself Ben Gordon due to my conscience, but also given away a lottery pick.

Yes, but would that be the morally correct thing to do?

Would it have been right that you enforced the rule, ran the sim at 5pm, and got Gordon?

You have always waited for people on trade deadline day, and always you stand nothing to gain by these trades.

Do you really, really want to be seen as the type of person who waits on the sim when you have nothing to gain by running it early, and runs the sim ASAP when you have everything to gain.

Hey, I wouldn't have said a thing if you had ran the sim at 5. But someone would have. I understand that life is more important than SSBA. The deadline was set, at 5pm, and if you had run it then, so be it, that's the rules.

But there are people in this league who would have considered that close to cheating and criminal.

5pm is a soft deadline not for you guys, but for me.

That allows me to fit the sim into my schedule at any point between 5pm and midnight and give you guys no grounds to be mad that it was done at that point.  It's not for you guys, it's not a fallback for you guys when things don't go your way, and it's not an excuse to miss a deadline.

And FAR too many take it for granted.

Let's not forget here that I am agreeing 100% with the decision that you made today.

We all apprecite you're good nature. That's why this league has gone as long as it is. You are UNDERSTANDING, like Jem was. You understand that the ClippersGM was going to make an offer to Gordon, and you allowed him to do so.

For that, I commend you. It's what makes this league work.

But like I said, you HAVE extended sims by A DAY to allow a missing GM to confirm a trade at the deadline.

That's giving these GM's ALOT of lee-way (is that how you spell it?). But it's also not a bad thing to do either.

No, I didn't.

ClippersGM was incommunicado.  He hadn't posted in nearly a week.  I sent him 2 E-mails and 1 PM in the past day with no response.  I had no reason to believe that after 6 days of no communication he'd show up in the last 2 hours.  I fully expected the "deadline" (RE: extension) to pass with no word from ClippersGM.  It was basically a prayer I threw for him to make.

Yeah, you kinda did.

You knew that he had full intentions to sign Gordon. Right?

You extended the deadline, which in turn, allowed him to send an offer to Gordon.

Maybe you didn't expect him before you extended the deadline to sign on. Fine. But that doesn't take away from the fact that BECAUSE you extended the deadline, he was able to offer Gordon a contract.

No, it doesn't give GM's leeway.  GM's have been using it as a crutch, and it's got to stop.

5pm is the deadline.  You can't expect me to extend it to 7.  You can't expect me to extend the deadline.  It's your fault if you miss it.  Period.  The fact that I have bent over backwards in the past doesn't mean i have to do it in the future.

I waited to run the sim until later because I respect what ClippersGM has done with the team and I know how much it would have sucked to lose Gordon.  I did not do it because I felt I owed anyone, him or the league, and it certainly would not have been wrong for me to run the sim.

I've been running the sim at 5 more and more often now because it's most convenient for me.  I'm at work, when I get home I typically have sh*t to do.  I have a better connection at work, especially upstream.  what takes me 10 minutes to upload at work can take me an hour here.

Well, I have no problem with that, because I have never missed a deadline.

But like I said before, had you choose this time to put your foot down, someone would have said something, and it wouldn't have been fun.

So do it at 5 pm. Do it at midnight. You're the boss, you do it when you want to. I respect that very much. That's the right way to do things.

The fact that I bent over backwards to give ClippersGM a chance doesn't mean it would have been wrong for me not to.  Especially considering the efforts I made to contact him and remind him prior to the deadline, clearly not actions taken by a man trying to rip him off.

Exactly what I have been saying the entire time, man!!

That's what makes you a great GM. The fact that you CARE.

I don't want you to feel like I am disagreeing with you here. I'm very happy with the fact that you care enough to try to contact the ClippsGM.

But I also would have been happy if you had run the sim at 5pm, and then when someone enivitably brought up the fact that running the sim at 5pm was a main reason you were able to re-sign Gordon, I would be in this thread on your side. I would have respected that decision.

Soooo sorry guys for this whole mess!!!!

I had been very very busy in the past week. I am starting a whole new organization for basketball camps. It is sooo much work but it will pay off in the future.
I also have some tax problems (for a big amount of money) since I live in Belgium and work in Holland. So I also spent a lot of time with lawyer and tax advisor.
On top of that... I had a very important talk with my girlfriend. She is the love of my life, I would do anything for her. There would of course be no way to run away from that talk to go on the internet for a basketball game. She is perfect for me and gives me a lot of freedom. But no way would she accept me going to the internet for that game on an important night with a long important talk.

Anyway... I hereby thank Bods for giving me the opportunity to still give my Gordon offer! I had feared that I would be late, but he gave me a chance! I have had a lot of bad luck lately (taxes, car, insurance,...) so I really really appreciate Bods kindness!

Thanks a lot and good luck to everyone!

Not to mention turnovers, and scoring.

And, the big thing.  to get davis we'd have to give up considerable talent.  for hawks, cavs or i to get gordon, we could get him for free.

The West is just as strong as the East is.  And if we did a top 10 teams picked to win the Championship, I am pretty sure it would be even,  5 from the East, and 5 from the West.

When analyzing my record last year I counted a top 6 from each conference.  Raptors, Nets, Hornets, Pacers, Magic, Sixers from the east.  Clippers, Mavs, Kings, Nuggets, Jazz, Warriors from the west.  And IMO any of these could have won last year....

Woohoo...  Finally, into the range of the elite... But the Jazz can never be discounted...  BTW, how much does it suck that we are all in the same division.
And Dallas, with a really good training camp, could easily surpass everyone.

I would say the Pacers and the Nets are the cream of the crop in the East, with the Magic and Sixers not too far behind.  Raps were easily the top, before the partial dismantle, now in with the 2nd tier.
