Title: GM of the Year
Post by: RaptorsGM on July 14, 2005, 11:06:20 AM
Let's begin nominations for the GM of the year.

Remember, this is NOMINATIONS, not VOTES. So I really only need to here each GM's name once.

Please bold the GM that you are nomintating, as that will make it easier for me to create a poll.

It would also be nice to have a breif description of why you are nomintation who you are.

I nomintate the JazzGM, as the trades that he made led him to a title.

NOMINATIONS:

JazzGM
SonicsGM
RaptorsGM
HawksGM
PacersGM

I nominate the Sonics...  The job he has doen in putting together such a deep, young talented team is impressive.

There, is that better ;)

I think the best mpve JazzGM did were the ones he DIDN'T make.  The feelings I got from him were that he was close to blowing it up.

Unfortunately, my nomination goes to RapsGM.  Getting Yao and Peja was huge.

I only made one move, but I thougth it was great (getting billups for a guy I signed on day 2 of FA).  Unfortunately it only got me to the 2nd round

BTW, Yao might be most improved player.  Going from 21/11 to 27/13.5 is huge.

Raptors, for the most lopsided trade in the league so far.

I appreciate the vote of confidence by GSW, but I must also vote the Raptors way as well.

My first choices have already been nominated, but I nominate the Hawks for their additions of Ginobili, Gadzuric and Thomas. I feel that they're going to be a nice surprise this coming season because of those additions and the probable maturation of their youth. They gained two A defenders and Gadzuric and Thomas provide very much needed rebounding. Thank goodness tehy don't have to put Prince at PF anymore, that just made me feel uncomfortable. I don't look for them giving up 100 points per game again.

I nominate JazzGM(bold won't work on my computer), he kept his core together and added Troy Murphy (huge) and Larry Hughes.  With AK47 he has a chance at being a perenniel powerhouse.  And now adding a future potential superstar PG through the draft he should be good for a while

I'll keep this open until Friday at 5.

Then voting will start, so we can have voting out of the way by the time the next season starts.

Well, nothing against the Sonics, but you take a team that got 4 top10 draft picks PLUS Shaq (which was not a genious strike but FA luck) - and that team ends up with a 31-51 record, seventh worst in SSBA (well, Shaq went down, I know, but hovering around .500 before was not overly impressive too)! To me that's nothing to warrant even a "GM of the year" nomination.

Completely overlooked was PacersGM again, the OTHER finalist least we forget. He did this with his starting C down, his 6th Jamison man down and a 39yr old playing meaningful minutes.
He didn't win it all but in my eyes thats good enough for a NOMINATION !

Sonics may be premature...  May be a better candidate for next year...
I just really liek the future of that team (except for the fcat they are in my division, which I really do not like)

They have a great future, sure. but this last season was so-so. Good deals (getting Magloire, Deng), bad deals (trading Shaq) and no deals (refusing to add a veteran to Shaq and Smith cost him the season imho - no way Shaq could win with 7 Rookies or so).

And in case i didn't tell before - I dont like that Magloire for (now) Ostertag & Jim Finley deal at all for the Sonics - sets them back at least 2 seasons at C.

Quick question:  How is the Magloire/Deng acquisition a good trade and the Shaq trade a bad one?  It was the same deal!

1. Trading Shaq away at all was bad because - as far as I believe - you could have gone deep in the playoffs with him (and not with Magloire/Deng as you found out)

2. Getting Magloire/Deng for him was very good. A future superstar (who was not ready yet) and a pretty good C.

3. Converting Magloire to an Ostertag/Finley combo is bad. Ostertag doesn't help you a lot now and Finley wont before most fellow young guys are out of their rookie contracts

So one deal can be good and bad at the same time. Again, this is nothing personal, just my opinion on these trades ...  8)
