Raptors also agree.

Makes perfect sense for me. I needed that big man off the bench, and I got him.

I maintain my cap space...actually increase it with the trade of Newman...for next year.  And gain a 2011 draft pick.  I figured that the couple players that would really help me wouldn't sign for less than max.  And I couldn't get to max.

Only down side....I really hoped to resign David West on day 2.  I had bird rights and was willing to offer more than the MLE but he took the MLE from the Magic.

Damnit spurs.  I mean, I realize why you did it.  Free first round pick.  But don't go helping the raptors, mmmk?

lol. yeah baby, yeah.

At this stage, I'd pretty much rather have Newman than the pick.

Plus, this team is already better than last year's team, and I really want to add a SG/SF with the MLE too.

Well, I don't see the point doing this deal at all.

This is an expiring for an expiring and a pick around 25. I get the feeling that any mid- to long term offer to a promising player - even keeping Cato and trying to deal his expiring later - would have done more for the Spurs.

Well i don't agree completely on that. Cato is nice with that A- defense and B+ rebs...but the 3 years deal are just too much for him though

nah, that deal's right about in line with what he would have gotten.  Things don't work out he could very easily be traded for an expiring.

I asked the Spurs to sign him to that deal - reason? What do I care about cap space?

I'm going to do everything I can to resign Baron in 2 years.

So that means no space for me for about 6 more years. I could have given Cato 6 years for all it mattered.

Actually the Raptors' deal was the one I did NOT want to go through.  And if I was dishonest type person would have never listed his FAs.   :P

My only hope is that he will continue his constant dealing and that the pick isn't as low in the draft as projected right now.  Part of why I was asking for 2011 picks in my negotiations....who knows what will happen in 3 seasons.

Cato wouldn't have given me anything that Rasho doesn't already.  My team need is for a primary offensive weapon....and the only one that I was really interested in wouldn't accept less than the max IMO.

And if there was such a great interest in Cato then why didn't anyone else ask for him?  I posted my intentions early enough that every GM could evaluate the FA class and make me offers.  The only player for which I got multiple requests for was Mikel Chamberlain.

I would have given you the pick for Cato. But the fillers are only problem... :?

LOL.

Well, I think my dealing is pretty much done. I can tell you that I will not be on the losing end of a deal for Yao, Peja, Mihm or Davis any time soon. And with my hopes of getting my starting SG in FA today, I will have my rotation set, with decent backup options too.

I mean, this is what I have now:

Yao/Cato/Hickcox
Mihm/Cato/Hickcox
Peja/Buckner/(Hopefully LLE)
(Hopefully MLE)/Springs/House
Davis/Lovelette/Schenk

Sure it was not your fault that Cato was the first to accept. But the outcome of that had me thinking a lot of future assets were flying your way and thus the mild disappointment.

And you are completely right, who knows whats in 3 years. I doubt the Raptors have the durability to keep a team intact for a whole season, let alone three ...

Spurs, I don't think you made a mistake at all.  Sure, I'm sure you were hoping for a better s&t deal, but you're only privy to which ones accept.

I'm just mad that the raptors got one of the best backup bigs in the game :)

I'm not mad :)

And hey Celtics, I kept them together all of last year    lol.

This trade really didn't affect the Spurs team at all.

He had 7.2 million to spend this year, must not have seen a FA that he liked, so he signed Cato for me, and picked up a free first rounder.

Yeah, I want them to be just like they were last year, and Cato would have made them a better team for sure.

You're likely right.
