Title: My Attempt at a Mock Draft
Post by: NetsGM on July 05, 2005, 10:51:44 AM
1) Wolves - Patrick Gatling (SG) - He's openly stated he's looking for a SG or a C.  No C's worthy of the #1 pick.  Fits team needs best and is arguably the BPA.  Possibly one of the few 2 way players in this draft, and his inside scoring should work next to Van Horn.  If he improves his offense, could put up 20-25 ppg.

2) Sonics - Boykins (PF) - Once again, might be the BPA and is also the best fit for the team.  With the moving of Magloire, Sonics need a PF to build next to Boykins.

3) Jazz - Schabinger (PG) - If his potential holds true, might be the best player in the draft, and once again fills a positional need.  Works out perfectly for the Jazz, in that neither the wolves and especially the sonics need a pg.

4) Blazers - Chase Russell (SF) - First 3 picks were easy, IMO.  This is where it starts to get difficult.  I honestly have no idea where this could go.  Needs a swingman bad, and Rusell might be the best.  But he needs time.

5) Hawks - Ivan Strong (PF) - I'm probably way off on this one.  But the Hawks need a potential dominant scorer.  With Tanner, Prince, Gadz and Gnobili anchoring a strong defensive core, a potential 20+ ppg scorer that can cause matchup problems galore is what this team needs.  But HawksGM is probably like me and would never take a C defender this high.
*edit* nevermind.  He just said he's taking Nesterovich.  Nice selection.  Had him rated as #3 in ready to contribute, but having your PF and Center as C rebounders scares me.

5) Hawks - Shane Nesterovich (PF)

6) Sonics - Jim Finley (C) - Honestly, I'm clueless here.  Figuring he drafts two bigs, hopes one of the two work out.

7) Knicks - Ivan Strong (PF) - Going hit or miss.  This kid could end up going Dirk offensively (with KVH defense), or his defense could remain terrible and render him practically useless.

8.) Hornets - Kareem Longley (SG) - Best fit for him and his 17 C's on roster.

9) Lakers - Garrett Ward (PG) - This guy's just too good to go any further, and Lakers could use a pg.

10) Lakers pt. 2 - Corey Hoiberg (SF)

very good, this is a tough year to predict though, my pick isn't finalized Nesterovich but he's more ready to contribute than Strong, I did target Strong at 8, but I think as you did the Knicks would select him at 7 or even the Sonics at 6, so I moved up so I would get my choice of the 2, it's gonna be a tough final decision for me at 5 but I think 1, 2 and 3 are a lock, after that it's a toss up

Yeah, I *think* 1, 2 and 3 should be pretty much a lock.  Not because anybody's really all that much better than other prospects, but because they are so even, you can predict teams going based on needs more, as there's no clear BPA.

I feel like I'm a girl on her period, my moods keep chaning about my #5 pick, Stong's better offensivley and rebounding and Nesterovich is a better defender

Oh man, come on, that's the ONE thing we don't need around here :) .  This is one of my escapes.

lol, yea this is my escape too, but my mood swinging is similar....but enough about my emotions and back to your mock draft...Chase Russell at 4 would be interesting.  My 2 favorite players in the draft are out of high school and one probably won't be taken in the lottery but aren't worthy of the 5 pick

Nice mock...
I think you are right, it is the Blazers that are the first team up in the air.
Although it does look like Chase is the best choice for them.
The Sonics, I also think you are right.  With Magloire gone, Finley is a great choice for them.  He will never be an offensive powerhouse, but he could be a defensive/rebounding monster.
And with English, Kundla, and Deng already on the roster, no need for a small guy.
Wow, the Sonics are looking scary, if this draft works out for them...

Hawks: Yeah, I decided to edit out my part of the post, no need to get into that with another pick.

No way Andy Miles will slip past the #7 pick. I think he just got overlooked (Cavs had him #3 in their Mock earlier)

This mock makes me happy if it goes anything like this. It looks like there will be at least 3 players that I was seriously considering taking with the 5th.

Miles could go 3.  But after that, I don't see any of the teams needing him until the Lakers at 9.

IMHO: Miles=Schabinger=Ward

It's just a matter of your priorities

yea, that's cool, but I know you would find him anyway, and if he's available at your pick he might not fall to me anyway

As for Miles, I see him going to the Blazers possibly, but after that the Lakers may shy away from him because he's similar to Arroyo and Ward is a different type of PG....his ratings are a lot like TJ Ford on my team, who is available

a possible trade in the work for the Nets...I'm guessing it's not you moving into the lottery because you did a mock

Very good chance Miles falls...  just like Snow did last year for the Celtics.  There are enough decent points in the league now, that PG's have a tendency to fall.

Of course, I think Schabinger has a big bonus most people overlook.  He is a C rebounder for a PG.  That may be good for 5-6 rpg out of your point.  He will help any team with their rebounding, as well as his PG skills...

thats a good point, he's as good ratings wise as my 7'4 center rebounding and if I take Nesterovich then my PF would be a C rebounder but Gadz at B+ backing up both is good

Hmmm...  not sure if you can win without at least one double digit rebounder, or at least a dominant rebounder at some position (AK47, for example...)
I had a B+ and a B- rebounder starting, and a B+ off the bench at the power spots, and that only got me to even rebounding...

yea, Gadz will be that guy if he starts, but I'm still kinda clueless which way to go in the draft, Nesterovich, Strong or even Russell, but he's basically Iggy at the SF

Lol... Was editing as you typed, lol...
The Jazz had a dominant rebounder at SF in AK47.

Tough to tell the truth, though, they made so many changes during the season.
Murphy pulled down 8+ rebounds in 27 minutes...  not bad at all...

During the playoffs, the Jazz did have one player average double digit rebounds.
C: Booth (31.7 mpg) - 10.2 rpg
PF: Murphy (29.4 mpg) - 8.9 rpg
SF: Kirilenko  (35.7 mpg) - 7.0 rpg
SG: Hughes (35 mpg) - 5.6 rpg
PG: Daniels (30.2 mpg) - 3.9 rpg

Dabods, you are chock full of great info :)

Both Hughes and AK are very good rebounders for their positions.
And 10 rpg in 32 mpg is quite good....

I have some insider information on the #3 pick...I just had lunch at Subway with the JazzGM and I found out at least one player who will be off the board w/my #5 pick, but I will keep that pick to myself until tonights 1-5 picks and say I told you so

Well, got 4 of 10 picks exactly correct.  Would have had 5 of 10 correct had I not changed my opinion on the hawks.  Last time I take his word at face value :)
