Title: Sonics / Spurs Trade
Post by: SonicsGM on May 23, 2005, 07:07:47 PM
Sonics Trade:
Latrell Sprewell
Zarko Cabarkaba
Jacquez Collier
2008 New Orleans Hornets First Round Pick
2009 Toronto Raptors First Round Pick
2010 Seattle Supersonics First Round Pick

Spurs Trade:
Joe Smith
Trent Kudla

Sonics agree...gives me another post player and another young gunner.

Spurs agree.

Smith wasn't in my long term plans so I was going to shop him this season.  I hate losing Kundla but get a solid young player with poor potential in return + the 3 draft picks.

This trade is huge for the Sonics.

Joe Smith gives this team a rebounding force to play next to Shaq and a young combo guard that will immediately start over Stockton at SG.  (However, a strong TC from either player will decide who is the starter)

The starting lineup as we speak:

C - Shaquille O'Neal
PF - Joe Smith
SF - Roberto Dickau
SG - Trent Kundla
PG - Nicklaus English

This team is pretty much set, and I just need to add my two exceptions.

Finals, here we come!

Hey, if you do well, do I get a "GM of the year" vote for shaq-gate?

BTW, I think this trade fits more in the spurs philosophy than keeping Smith, who while may marginally help them wouldn't have gotten them anywhere.

You can be "Co-Executive Of The Year" with me.

Lucky..maybe a bit.

I did have the cash to throw Shaq's way.  I didn't think that I would land him, but I did have the money that he wanted.

Now, don't get me wrong, Sonics did a tremendous job getting 3 of the top 4 picks, and turning that into very good talent (although that might have been better in a different year.  Imagine him ending up with Oscar Ferry, Garrett Pettit and Mason Mercer   ).

That being said, this is the trade that likely makes the Sonics serious contenders this year.
Joe Smith is a great role player to have next to Shaq.

For the Spurs, they get three picks, but most would appear to be non-lottery.  But would you ever get more for Joe Smith??? I think not.  They got more then value for the Joe Smith.

Win win, although this makes the Spurs worse in the short term.  I thought the Smith addition helped them last year.
