Title: Shaq-gate Resolution
Post by: NetsGM on May 23, 2005, 02:16:04 PM
Alright, Hornets and I have gone back and forth about how to solve this hole shaq issue.  There are really 3 alternatives:
1) Leave things how they were (heat get screwed, since the sonics offer wasn't what he meant it to be, and the rules page was wrong)
2) Re-run day 1 of FA, with only changing the outcome of shaq (meaning, all the other FA's stay on their respective teams), allowing only bids for shaq to be changed, giving teams chances to change their bids according to the updated rules (sonics get screwed, if shaq signs elsewhere, then not only will they have lost out on shaq but they will have lost out on all the free agents who signed day 1).
3) Run Day 1 of FA all over again. (any of the teams who lose free agents they had previously signed on yesterdays day 1 get screwed).

I didn't determine any of them to be ultimately fair.

So, here's what I've come up with.

Sonics have the choice.  They can either keep Shaq at the 6 year contract (no shortening it to 3), or they can allow the Heat to have him at the 6 year contract.

If the Sonics keep Shaq:
- Sonics get Shaq at 6 year contract
- Heat get to take any 2 contracts on their team and change them to 1 million $ contracts for the duration of their remaining years
- Heat get my 2008 Bulls 1st Round pick

If Sonics let Heat have Shaq:
- Heat get Shaq at the 6 year contract he signed with the Sonics
- Sonics get my 2008 Bulls 1st round pick

-----------------------------------------------

This is the best compromise I've come up with to limit how much people get screwed.

Sonics, you're on the clock.

Man, oh man, you take that very hard on yourself. I wish David Stern had half that dignity when HE screws something up ...

... gosh, I forgot, he never does !!!

Great compromise, but one team will suffer next season ...
No wait, it's 28 teams suffering that won't have Shaq, so are we all entitled to a draft pick of yours ? ;-)

Yeah, I'm not having the greatest FA period lol.

Not only did I not get my top 2 targets, not only do I only have 4 people under contract, but somehow I lost a 1st round pick in this process, lol.

But it was my bad.  No reason for one of the 2 teams to get screwed over because I didn't double check what I submitted.

this is very bold of you, but I think we should just leave things how they happened, the Heat did get screwed but I think he can probably understand that you made a mistake and after 2 or so hours of putting things into the program you might just want to get it over with...this is coming from the guy who has the Sonics 2008 1st, I think it's just too much of a hassle to change it now

What I Think is most fair would be option 2, but thats IMO.

One of the reasons that Shaq might have signed with the Sonics is because the Heat didn't belly up.

But then, it wouldn't be all that fair to others who had cap space but lost it (such as me)

Wouldn't be fair to the sonics, as they wouldn't have had the option of using his money on the players who signed yesterday.

I've thought about all 3 of those options, literally, all day.  I don't like any of them.  So this isn't really a vote for one of those 3 options, the decision's been made.

Nets, in no way should number 3 be even considered an option.

I say we settle Shaq Gate in an ultimate battle of rock, paper, scissors.  Let the 2 E-Thugs (Sonics, Heat) duel it out.

Send your selection (rock, paper, scissor) to me via PM, and I will decide the winner.

O yeah, and since I thought of the idea, I get to participate as well.

And one more thing, instead of Shaq its Yao we're playing for

Option 3 is a no-no because now that we all kind of have a idea what everyone's offers are and people with cap space would have an advantage on those that don't.

Guys, let me reiterate, WE'RE NOT VOTING ON THIS.

I'm simply waiting on Sonics decision.

Alright, Sonics are keeping shaq.

Heat:
Tell me what 3 guys you want to have a contract of $1,000,000 for every year remaining on their contract.

Sweet consolation prize

That's an amazing consolation prize.

I am keeping Shaq.  Can't argue with the Big Aristotle.  If he wants to sign, then he gets to sign.

BTW Sonics, I doubt Shaq will play all six years of his contract, probably play four and then retire.

It's not really a consolation prize, it's kinda like an "oops, I f'd up, and who knows what your team would look like had I not" prize.

*NOTE*

After consultation, bumped the # of contracts he can change down to 2.

Trying to balance how much the heat lost while not hurting the rest of the league.

Damn! Dabods, i think this is a very Humanitarian move in your part..

But i think that giving the bulls 1st rounder is too much.
