You can either

- completely remove your 2nd round pick from ur roster
or
- add a 3rd year to ur 2nd round pick

I'm in one of the sim leagues using FBB as well.

should we consider an option like this to make the league more realistic?

I' on bods side here and object to this change.

At least now, as this would have major implications on the league: Our drafts and FA signings would be different as the chance to develop 2nd rounders (who'd gain bird rights then) might lead to different roster decisions. So such a change would have to be implemented before the draft and probably announced a season in advance as well.

I'm also against either change.  If you don't want your second rounder then give it away or draft & immediately cut the player.

And to give them 3 years would restrict possible player movement too much.

Yeah, it would be a big deal to change that when the season is about to start, since it would have a big affect. But it does suck that you can't re-sign 2nd rounders.

It's a tradeoff.

The 29th pick in the draft has a starting salary of 1.642 million increasing for 4 guaranteed years.

The 30th pick in the draft has a starting salary of .332817 million for 2 years.

That makes the 30th pick significantly more valuable than the 29th pick.  To counteract that, for the benefit of getting a lower initial starting salary you have trouble in 2 years if the pick breaks out (you'll have, at the MINIMUM, the MLE to offer them after that).

It sucks, because after the two years, you're done with the player. You're just like any other team that would try to sign him in free agency.

I agree, it does suck. But it is how it is.
